WHO IT'S FOR

Duesy for roommates: shared bills and IOUs

You paid the electric bill. Your roommate bought the paper towels and the dish soap. Someone else fronted the pizza on Friday and the Uber home. Nobody wants a spreadsheet, and the third "wait, who owes who?" of the month is where a good living situation starts to sour.

Duesy keeps the IOUs straight in private, and nets them down to one number.

Sharing a home is common

About a third of adults share a household. Nearly a third of American adults, about 79 million people, live in a shared household, meaning a home with another adult who is not their spouse, partner or a college-age student. That share has been climbing since the mid-1990s.

Roommates are part of that. About one in five of those extra adults lives in a home headed by someone they are not related to, usually a housemate or roommate. Most of the rest live with parents or other relatives, which comes with its own shared bills.

Money is the usual friction. The bills are not the hard part. The small, untracked amounts are.

A month in a three-person apartment

  • Electric bill, $96: you; each roommate owes you $32

  • Groceries run, $54: Jordan; you owe Jordan $18

  • Internet, $60 (repeats monthly): Sam; you owe Sam $20

  • Your swap with Jordan: nets to $14 Jordan owes you

How it works for a shared place

  • Set the repeating bills once. Rent shares and internet can repeat every month with reminders, as part of Duesy Pro.

  • Log the one-offs as they happen. Groceries, a cleaning run, a ride to the airport. Favors and borrowed things count too.

  • Let swaps net out. You cover utilities, they cover groceries, and Duesy shows the one number left.

  • Settle in a tap. Mark it paid, or open Cash App or Venmo.

  • Nudge without nagging. Send a reminder or a statement by text. Your roommates do not need the app.

Questions roommates ask

Can my roommates see what I track?

No. There is no account and no Duesy server. Your ledger is encrypted on your phone.

What if a roommate says the numbers are wrong?

If they also use Duesy, a signed statement can be checked in their app, so nobody can change the numbers after it is sent.

We used Splitwise before. Can I bring it over?

Yes. Duesy Pro reads a Splitwise CSV export or any spreadsheet saved as CSV, with a preview before anything is added.

Is Duesy free?

Adding and settling debts, favors and swaps, search, backup and Spanish are free, with one small banner ad. New installs get 30 days of Pro with no card.
