WHO IT'S FOR
MilePal for delivery and rideshare drivers: mileage log
MilePal for delivery and rideshare drivers is a mileage tracker. Every delivery and passenger mile logged on its own, with an IRS-ready log at tax time.
The problem
Gig drivers put on a lot of miles, and every forgotten trip is money left on the table at tax time. Writing down each trip between orders is not realistic, and the apps you drive for only report the miles while you have an order, not the miles between them.
How it works
Drive as usual. Android tells MilePal when you start driving, and it records the trip on its own.
Swipe each trip right for Business or left for Personal, then tap a purpose from your own labels.
Name a place once, like the restaurant you pick up from most, and every drive there arrives as Business with its purpose filled in.
Set Work hours so tracking turns off when you are off the clock.
At tax time, export the year as a PDF or CSV and hand it to whoever does your taxes.
What the log shows
The IRS asks for the date, where you went, why, and the miles of each business trip, plus your total miles for the year. MilePal keeps each of those for you as you drive, so the log is built at the time of the trip, not rebuilt from memory in April. Read what a mileage log needs to show the IRS for the details and sources.
Questions
Does MilePal work in the background?
Yes. Android tells MilePal when you start driving. It records the drive and sleeps the rest of the time.
Is MilePal free?
Tracking and the log are free and never run out. You get 30 days of everything except the tax reports when you start.
What should a mileage log show?
The date, destination, business purpose and miles of each trip, plus your total miles for the year. See our mileage log guide for the IRS sources.
Do the miles between orders count?
This is a question for a tax professional, since it depends on your situation. MilePal records the whole drive, so you have the full record either way and can decide with your preparer.
Is MilePal on iPhone?
MilePal is an Android app. It is coming soon to Google Play.
