WHO IT'S FOR
MilePal for real estate agents: mileage tracker
MilePal for real estate agents is a mileage tracker. Showings, open houses and listing appointments, logged as you drive between them.
The problem
Agents drive all day between showings, inspections, closings and appointments. Rebuilding those miles from a calendar in April is slow and easy to get wrong, and a log rebuilt months later is the kind the IRS trusts least. The IRS asks that records be made at or near the time of the trip.
How it works
MilePal records each drive on its own. Android tells it when you start driving, and it sleeps the rest of the time.
Swipe each trip right for Business or left for Personal, then tap a purpose or a client from your own labels.
Name a listing address once and every drive there arrives as Business with its purpose filled in.
Set Work hours so weekend errands do not get tracked.
Hand your accountant an IRS-ready log as a PDF or CSV.
What a good log looks like
For each business trip: the date, where you went, why, and the miles. For the year: total miles driven, business and personal. MilePal keeps those as you go. The details and the IRS sources are in what a mileage log needs to show the IRS.
Questions
Is driving from home to my office deductible?
Commuting to your regular workplace generally is not. Driving between showings and clients during the day usually is. Ask a tax professional about your situation.
Can I keep personal drives out of the log?
Yes. Swipe each trip Business or Personal, and only business trips go in the log.
Can I tag trips by client?
Yes. Purposes and clients are your own labels, and a named address sorts itself to the right client every time.
Is MilePal free?
Tracking and the log are free and never run out. You get 30 days of everything except the tax reports when you start.
Is MilePal on iPhone?
MilePal is an Android app. It is coming soon to Google Play.
